Number of websites taken down across Europe in response to global cybersecurity alert

Ireland’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has issued an advisory about the update, as have its UK and EU-wide counterparts.

A CYBER SECURITY update has resulted in a number of websites across Europe being taken down.

It involves PHP, a scripting language geared towards web development, which many online services use.

Two critical vulnerabilities were found with PHP and an update was issued. However, online services that have yet to install the update may be at risk from hackers.

These vulnerabilities can provide a direct path to the server’s file system or database, meaning hackers could potentially get user information such as passwords, credit card details and contact details.

Online services unable to update immediately have been advised to take their websites down for now.

Finland has taken its state internet services offline, and the Netherlands’ cycbersecurity agency has taken its website down.

Meanwhile, France has taken websites for its prefectures (local administrative offices) down.

Government websites in Australia and Japan have also been impacted.

Ireland’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has issued an advisory about the update, as have its UK and EU-wide counterparts.

The Journal‘s website is also temporarily offline while it strengthens defences in response to the global cybersecurity alert. Our newsroom is still operating as normal and our journalism is still available on our free iOS and Android apps.
